Few weeks ago, when he heard about his biology teacher talked about plants he was very interested. Even when he was at picnic (at mysore), he had sat near a brook and wondered how the plants got there.</div> <div><br /></div><div>A week ago, Rahul with his parents went to nursery, bought 16 pots, mud, manure and brought it home. They were are excited about buying pots and growing plants, Rahul had have seen lots of plants in his dads friend Ganesh-uncle's house. After hearing his teacher and seeing Ganesh uncle's care for the plants, Rahul too wanted to grow a small nursery of plants, take care of them like how Ganesh uncle does. He was excited to learn about those and he was very eager to seem them grow. Rahul and his parents picked a nice spot in their balcony where sunlight fell (he knew sunlight is essential for plants to grow), they mixed the mud and manure; then they filled the pots with 10 cups of this mixture. Rahul planted the cosmos seed - he loved the this plant a lot, since the plant had very bright and beatuiful yellow and orange colour flowers which were his favorite. He then dispersed the seed on the top of the mixture and covered them with one cup of mud-manure mixture. He watered the pots carefully...and cleaned up the place behind them. </div><div><br /></div><div>Since then, he has been watering the plants. For the past few days, Rahul checked on the pots regularly and watering them regularly. Today he saw a tiny plant peeping out... Rahul was very excited, he called Ganesh uncle, and shared his news and told him that in 2-3 months, he will be able to see the bright yellow and orange flowers right on his balcony...</div> </span>DDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12171542890145670302noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6587445228264769022.post-79977759454643601202008-11-26T21:49:00.001-08:002008-11-26T22:58:29.055-08:00Rahul thinks about Seeds DispersalRahul was sitting near the brook by his house - he was feeling nice and peaceful; He had brought a book to read with him. He could hear the water flow by the brook and a birds chirping. He was letting his mind wander about what he learned at class a couple of days ago.<div>He liked what the teacher taught about the plant life - the various aspects of it - and specifically was interested about the seed dispersal.</div><div>He looked at a plant by the brook and posed a question to it, "How did you get here ?"</div><div>----------------- stop here</div><div><br /></div><div>He smiled to himself; he recalled what his teacher taught in the school - the seed could have gotten here by wind, or carried by a bird, or stuck to a person shirt and carried over to this place. There were many possibilities.</div><div>He then looked around decided it didn't matter how the seed got there; the plant was green and its flowers colorful.</div><div>The seed had gone through a germination process and had transformed itself into a plant. Now it has flowered and looking at on the side of the brook, moulding itself calmed him.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>DDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12171542890145670302noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6587445228264769022.post-43771857452411849482008-11-17T10:01:00.001-08:002008-11-17T14:06:37.453-08:00Interesting Life Sciences class (Seeds dispersal)<div class="gmail_quote"><div>Rahul was in the class waiting for the teacher to come in; The teacher came in a bit late and announced that the class would be different; She would show a video of on plants. Specifically on pollination and how seeds travel. Rahul liked and enjoyed travel - he was already making guesses within his head on how seeds will go from on place to another - will someone pack in a box transport those boxes by trucks/ships/aeroplane. He was excited and curious to know how the seeds will travel. </div><div><br /></div><div>His teacher switched on the video, projected on the wall.</div> <div> </div> <div>There were several beautiful yellow and orange coloured cosmos plants in a garden inside thick woods, the flowers on the stem were in different stages - one as a bud, other blooming, the third on was wilted and dry; and the fourth one was dry long thin black seeds. In the picture, suddenly the wind speed picked up and it was blowing hard, the seeds were carried by the wind, some seeds fell on the ground a bit away from the plant, some seeds fell on the brook which was near by; the seeds were carried by the water. After some distance some seeds slowly settled on the sides of the brook. Rahul saw few monkeys came to the brook, drank water in the brook, played in the water by splashing and diving. Rahul notices that one seed getting stuck on monkeys hairy skin. Monekys walked away from the brook, there were looking for some food, they shook their body as they were walking, the seeds stuck on their skin fell down to the ground. He also saw the monkey jump up the tree, plucked mangoes ate the mangoes threw the seeds down, some of the monkey threw the mango seeds far away. </div> <div> </div> <div>Rahul slearnt the seeds go from one place to another by other ways, not by vehicles, as he does.</div></div>DDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12171542890145670302noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6587445228264769022.post-31956365338391658972008-11-10T20:04:00.001-08:002008-11-10T20:07:55.761-08:00Karate, Life Sciences and Hydration<span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial; font-size: 13px; ">At Karate, Rahul had a very good work-out; he had started on the new Kata - it was quite tough - it was called Bassai Dai - but he did practice hard. He still need to get some of the forms correct and with "ki". Rahul always feels better after a very good workout at the Karate dojo. Also, he has learned that for body to remain healthy, he has to drink a lot of water - water is like a lubricant that reduces the friction (he learned that in the Science class). Particularly, after a godo workout, he had studied that the body loses water and salt from the body and it is required to drink a lot of water and keep the body hydrated. There was this helper from the school office behind her, carrying a lot of paper, tapes and few scissors and a small knife. Quietly she asked the helper to set the paper down and then took a sheet of paper and scissors and let it run wild on the paper - there was a flurry of cuts, tucks, folds, unfolds and at the end of it, when she unfolded the paper, it was a beautiful design that Rahul ever saw. Rahul loved cutting papers, but this was wonderful. The lady then told the word "Kirigami". Then she tool another sheaf of paper and started folding them - she did very little cuts this time with the scissors, but seemed to use it just to make some fine adjustments... But as her hands played fast and at the end of the flurry of hands, there was beautiful peacock in her hand - the lady said this was "Origami". Rahul looked at it with great suprise - it was unexpected, but he did not feel anxious, but he was feeling thrilled about it - he felt like it was the time, he went on the race-car with his father.DDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12171542890145670302noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6587445228264769022.post-35380610124019987232008-10-30T21:51:00.000-07:002008-11-01T22:04:20.440-07:00Doodling - Bored on FridayIt was a Friday evening and Rahul had just come back from school. As soon as Rahul entered, his mom pointed him to the table where she had some snacks for him and left. Rahul ate snacks and was alone in the house. He felt bored - he played around in the computer for a while. But it was boring - he switched on the TV to watch a match, but it was raining and the match was canceled... He then took out a paper and started writing what he felt... then he drew or doodled for a while; wrote some poetry (or set of sentences with rhyming words)...DDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12171542890145670302noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6587445228264769022.post-262661044078318832008-10-30T15:42:00.000-07:002008-11-01T22:06:21.688-07:00Learning about MexicoThe school was as usual - set of classes. There was a difference though - the teacher had brought in the world-map with lot of photographs, and some articles like hat. Rahul found it very interesting - he enjoyed his Geography class - He found out that Mexico was far away from India to the west - One had to cross Arabian Sea, Europe and the Atlantic ocean to reach that county. It was also south of US. He also learnt about Cultures and traditions of Mexico were different from his own. He came home googled Mexico and found more information about the county - their capital city, population, dresses, flags etc.Gem Galhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13963927952264151091noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6587445228264769022.post-17334632498936993972008-10-26T12:26:00.000-07:002008-11-01T22:06:04.471-07:00Karate - The new Katha day !Rahul loved his karate class today - the sensei taught new Katha. He had started on Karate when he was 11 year old. The new katha was very good and difficult that Rahul came home and practiced it as he does many times. Rahul was happy since Senseis said, that if he continues to practice this hard, in about 18 months time, he would get his black belt.Gem Galhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13963927952264151091noreply@blogger.com0
